“they are mostly cambodian boys trafficked to the town of aranya prathet by bus. from there, a thai agent takes them to the town of samut sakhon, on the coast of south bangkok. the boys are taken to sea where they are forced to catch fish for twenty hours a day for many months. the ship captains force the boys to take amphetamines so they can work non stop, but the boys are kept on the ship.”

“at the end of the fishing season, many are shot and thrown into the sea. this phenomenon has become increasingly common throughout east asia, south asia, eastern europe and africa. ukrainian boys are trafficked for forced labor on russian fishing boats in the black sea and young boys in ghana are forced to work in the deadly fishing operation on lake volta. beyond the fishing runs, forced labor tactics are used throughout the supply chain, from processing to packaging of sea food for distribution in the west, most prevalently in the $1.5 billion shrimp markets of bangladesh and thailand”

“the next day another prostitute told me if i wanted to eat i should start work. i told her i would rather starve. after four days another woman from the mahato caste tried to convince me. i still refused. after one week a man came. they made an arrangement for me with the man for sixty thousand rupees. ($1,333). they told him i was still a virgin.”

“the man stayed with me for two weeks. i was forced to be with him even though the pain was unbearable. four days after the man left another customer came.i was still bleeding so the man went to the gharwali and shouted “why did you send me to a woman who is still on her period?” the gharwali asked me if i was having my period, but i told her the wounds it was from the wounds in my vagina. the malik called the doctor and he stitched up my wounds. i was given rest for three days, then i was forced to be with customers. my stitches opened, and i started bleeding again. this process happened twelve times.”

“i do not know how many years i was in kamathipura. i used to be with twenty-five customers a day. if we felt we would faint from the pain, the gharwali gave us medicine. we had to keep making sex with customers no matter what.”

from John Berger via David Levi Strauss

David Levi Strauss:

I received this from John Berger on Saturday.

Please diffuse and publish:

We are now spectators of the latest – and perhaps penultimate – chapter of
the 60 year old conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people. About
the complexities of this tragic conflict billions of words have been
pronounced, defending one side or the other.

Today, in face of the Israeli attacks on Gaza, the essential calculation,
which was always covertly there, behind this conflict, has been blatantly
revealed. The death of one Israeli victim justifies the killing of a
hundred Palestinians. One Israeli life is worth a hundred Palestinian
lives.

This is what the Israeli State and the world media more or less – with
marginal questioning – mindlessly repeat. And this claim, which has
accompanied and justified the longest Occupation of foreign territories in
20th C. European history, is viscerally racist. That the Jewish people
should accept this, that the world should concur, that the Palestinians
should submit to it – is one of history’s ironic jokes. There’s no laughter
anywhere. We can, however, refute it, more and more vocally.

Let’s do so.

John Berger

hi all,
Ohad Meromi (mfa sculpture faculty) sent me this online petition via his wife who is in tel aviv now, calling to stop the israeli bombing now – and asked me to forward to all of you. here’s his email: (i hope the image i am sending comes thru, if not let me know. it’s a jpg attachment to show english speakers how to fill it out.)

it does not have an english version, so i attach a jpeg to help english speakers know where to fill out their name….
its a very non-radical call, the only one i could find, asking to stop the fire right a way and start talking. since the israeli goverment has been preparing us for a long operation, and is talking about ground troops, any voice should be heard to stop this.

Hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza have been massacred and wounded today as Israel has launched a massive bombing campaign against the people of Gaza. The bombing rampage took place as thousands of Palestinian children were in the streets on their way home from school. Palestinian parents were running frantically in the streets looking for their children as U.S.-provided F-16s and Apache helicopters rained down more than 100 bombs and missiles on Gaza.

The U.S.-backed Israeli Occupation Force destroyed every security station in Gaza. AFP reported: “There was no space left in the morgue and bodies were piled up in the emergency room and in the corridors, as many of the wounded screamed in pain.”

Because of the U.S.-backed Israeli blockade and strangulation of the people of Gaza for the past 18 months there is little or no medicine to treat the wounded, electricity for hospitals, or food or clean water for much of the population.

An Israeli military spokesperson said, “The operation is ‘only just beginning’.” The Israeli Defense Ministry said in a statement: “The action will continue and will widen as much as is demanded according to the evaluation of the situation by the high command of the army.”

Gunness, a spokesman for the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), said the agency has been unable to get needed medical supplies into Gaza for more than a year, because of Israel’s blockade of border crossings.
Don’t Miss

“Long, long lists of drugs and other medical supplies which in the U.S. would be considered standard in any hospital — they’re just not available in Gaza,” he said. “When people have been turning up for treatment following this massive attack, they are simply being turned away. If you’ve got things like shattered limbs, broken arms, broken legs, feet blown off, that kind of thing, you’re simply not being seen. If you’ve got very light injuries and you need bandages or aspirins, you’ll get seen.”
